Venturing Crew 62 Competes in 2014 FASNY Winter Games
By Captain Matt Yorke & Firefighter Mike Harris
February 11, 2014
On Saturday, February 9th and Sunday, February 10th, the SSFD sponsored Venture Crew 62 competed in the 2014 Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Winter Games held in Cortland, NY. Co-sponsored by the Cortland County Firemen’s Association, more than 300 firefighters and Venturers/Explorers from 32 Fire Departments across New York State, dressed in full turnout gear and participated in a range of events throughout the weekend. The 2014 Games represented the largest field of competitors to date. The teams consisted of five members, and the games included both senior and junior teams.
The events on Saturday began with snow tube races at the Greek Peak Mountain Resort outdoor adventure center where the Crew had a few great runs snow tubing down the mountain. The events on Saturday continued with sled pull followed by hose relay and tug-of-war. The games allow for Fire Departments to engage in a friendly competition with one another while at the same time learning important training skills. For example, the hose relay event teaches Venturers and Explorers how important it is to work together while fighting a fire, while also the practicality of advancing and attaching hose lengths.
The weekend's events culminated on Sunday with a broomball tournament at the SUNY Cortland Park Center Alumni Ice Arena where the Crew beat out all the other youth teams and advanced all the way to the semi-finals with the senior teams, placing fourth out of 40 competing teams.
The Department would like to extend a congratulations to Crew 62! This was the first time the SSFD was represented at the Games, and after a great weekend, the Crew hopes to rally an adult team and compete again next year.

In the sled pull, members had to pull the sled to the patient, transport the patient onto the stokes trailer, then pull the sled to safety all the while resisting the urge to just start the quad's engine.
