South Salem Fire Department Responds to Two-Alarm Structure Fire in Vista
By 1st Assistant Chief Mike Davison
June 24, 2026
On the evening of Monday, June 22, members of the South Salem Fire Department (SSFD) responded on a dual dispatch to assist the Vista Fire Department with a reported structure fire at 126 Elmwood Road in the Vista section of Lewisboro. Units were dispatched shortly after 8:00 p.m. as Vista companies began responding to the scene. While crews were still en route, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing a large mutual-aid response from departments across both Westchester County and Connecticut. Upon arrival, Car 2451 and Car 2452 assumed command support roles, assisting Vista command with overall fireground operations and accountability. Members assigned to Engine 166 donned their gear, assisted in stretching hose line, and worked alongside Vista crews during primary and secondary searches of the structure while Tanker 2 supplied water to the scene. During the operation, a Vista firefighter transmitted a mayday after falling through the first floor into the basement. South Salem members were among those who assisted in locating and extricating the firefighter from the building. The firefighter was placed into EMS care, transported to a local hospital, and was subsequently released. No residents were home at the time of the fire, which was reported to dispatchers by a passerby. The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team responded and is investigating to determine the cause. The South Salem Fire Department commends all personnel from Vista and the mutual-aid agencies who worked together to bring this incident to a safe conclusion. We wish the injured firefighter a full and speedy recovery.
